Sandwiches are the great American lunch food and with Applegate Farms Organic and Natural Deli Meats you can feed your child a wholesome lunch that not only is good for their body but good for mother earth too.

Applegate has been producing high quality hot dogs, bacon, and deli meats with only natural ingredients for over 25 years. In the food industry “Natural” can mean many things, but when you see it on the label of Applegate deli meats, you know the meat inside is guaranteed to be the real deal. Applegate deli meats are free of antibiotics and hormones; free of artificial ingredients or preservatives; and made from animals that are fed a vegetarian diet and treated humanely.

As a member of the MomsMeet I get the opportunity to check out great products that are good for me, my family and for the world. I had previously tried the Applegate farms hotdogs but never the deli meats. I easily found them in my local grocer’s deli meat isle. There were many selections to choose from and I choose the Organic Oven Roasted Turkey and the Natural Black Forest Ham. I thought they both tasted really good. Their Black Forest Ham is mild. I like a more Robust Ham but I would still buy it again. The Turkey was fabulous. It was tender and juicy. I ate both of the meats on sandwiches but also took 2 slices of each, diced them and put them on a salad for an impromptu chef salad and I adored this option. The ham and turkey also worked well diced up in an omelet or breakfast burrito.

I really like the nutritional profile of Applegate Farms Deli Meats. For example for a 2-ounce serving of Natural Black Forest Ham you get 10g of protein with only 50 calories and 1.5g of fat. That’s pretty good if you ask me!

As I mentioned before my kids eat a lot of packed lunches but sometimes the old standby sandwich gets a bit boring. Here are some ideas straight out of my kitchen.
–I often make deli meat rollups for Karolyn. I put inside a bit of Dijon mustard and voila, they are done. If your child likes cheese add some cheese.

–Applegate Farms deli meat also works great for making cute pinwheel sandwiches. Just lay on your deli meat of choice, a slice of Applegate Farms sliced  cheese, your choice of condiments (I like to make my own herbed mayo) and roll them up tight in a tortilla. You can put a piece of plastic wrap then put it in the frig overnight and in the morning slice them up. The plastic wrap helps it mold together and take shape.

–Put together a chefs salad for your son or daughter. Include lettuce, cherry tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, sliced red, yellow and orange peppers in one bowl. In a 2nd place diced deli meat such as the Black Forest Ham and the Organic Oven Roasted Turkey. You can also include diced cheese in your container with the meat. In a 3rd place the dressing for your son or daughter. I sometimes will include a small mixture of nuts, and seeds for my children to add to their salads for a little crunch. Keeping everything separate I find works best plus your son or daughter gets the fun of mixing everything together.

–Lastly and probably my most important tip for lunch packing ideas is get your child involved in the process. No one knows what they like better than they do. Have them assemble a “Rainbow Snack Pack” where they take a plastic bag and place 3 veggies of different colors inside such as red and yellow peppers, carrots and cucumbers. Add some additional color with a fruit bowl with blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. When they help put their lunch together they are much more likely to finish every bite. Plus that special time putting lunch together with their mom or dad is priceless. It is fun making dinosaur or flower shaped sandwiches but in the end it doesn’t matter how “designer” our child’s lunch looks if it is full of items they don’t like and items with zero nutritional value.

Next time you are at the grocery store give Applegate Farms a try. Their line of deli meats and cheese as well as hot dogs, corn dogs, dinner sausages, bacon and much more are sure to taste good as well as make you feel good about serving them to your family.

Right now we are giving away Applegate Farms products to 2 lucky MSEL readers. To enter go to their website and tell me which product you want to try and why. If you are already an Applegate fan tell us what your favorite Applegate product is and why.
