Challenges Faced By a New Production Company
In the movie industry, there are a number of independent production and development companies that are trying to make their mark. Independent studios have a number of advantages that big studios cannot replicate, but they also face a unique set of challenges. Here are some of the problems that new production and development companies have to face on a daily basis:
Securing Funding
One of the big problems that these new companies have to deal with is figuring out how to come up with money for funding new projects. Making a new movie is an expensive venture, and it takes a lot of money on the front end. From paying for the equipment, access to the shooting locations, salaries of actors, and all of the staff, it can really add up.
Big movie studios don’t really have much of a problem with this as they can come up with millions of dollars on a whim. Independent studios need to have alternative sources of financing. They may have to bring on investors or borrow the money from alternative lenders.
Attracting the Talent
Another potential problem that new production and development companies have to deal with is attracting the right talent. In the movie industry, the success of films largely depends on the quality of acting. If a movie project can’t attract big name actors, it may be dead in the water. There have been plenty of good movies that have not been successful simply because they do not have any recognizable faces in them.
One example of an independent studio that has managed to get over this hurdle is Oxymoron Entertainment. They were once a struggling independent company, and they’ve now been able to bring in some of the biggest names in Hollywood for their latest project, Columbus Circle. Names like Jason Lee, Selma Blair, and Amy Smart have signed on for the project.
Distribution and Promotion
Even when a good movie has been produced, the studio has to figure out a way to distribute the movie and get it promoted. Unless plenty of people know about the movie, it will be dead in the water. Once the movie has some big names behind it, it can lend some credibility to the film overall.
The challenges that a new production company has to overcome are many. However, if they can get past these hurdles, they can continue growing and break into the mainstream.
