What’s Going On With Dalia Royce On ABC’s Suburgatory?
So last week on ABC’s Suburgatory we saw that Dalia was trying to buddy up to Tessa. Not just buddy up, but getting really creepy about it, posting everything they did on Facebook edging on stalker crazy. We come to find out she was just jealous that Tessa was spending time with Dalia’s old girlfriend Jenna Werner, Noah’s daughter. But then at the end of the show Lisa Shay walked in on something even scarier, numerous pictures of Dalia and George or “Daddy Altman” as she calls him with little captions written beneath. It seemed like some sort of shrine. She calmly tells Lisa that she didn’t see anything and that Lisa needs to leave. This leads to a pretty big question, “What’s Going On With Dalia Royce?”
I was given the inside scoop when I spent an evening on the set of Suburgatory a few months ago. The actress who plays Dalia, Carly Chaikin was absolutely one of my favorite people ever to spend time with and interview. Not only is she down to earth but she is fun and funny as well. Here is what she had to say about playing this deadpan socialite on ABC’s Suburgatory and a little about her own future as well.
Dalia Royce isn’t mean exactly, she’s simply misguided. When I had a few minutes with actress Carly Chaikin she explained it as “Without a filter”. The truth is, Tessa has hurt Dalia far more than Dalia’s ever hurt Tessa. However, as this season goes on we are going to see a side of Dalia that is evil and sociopathic. She really gets crazy. There is going to be a big secret revealed which Chaikin could not reveal, but Dalia will be getting revenge and it’s nothing you’ll be able to guess and Tessa ends up uncovering it which does not make Dalia happy.
Chaikin didn’t pull from any real life experience to create Dalia Royce, she just came up with it on her own because she is a great actress. Those were my words, not hers, she blushed and acted very humble when I said this. She actually auditioned for Tessa initially and was called back for Dalia. Her usual characters in the past were deeper and darker so this blonde spoiled suburban princess was a bit of a jump for her. That’s when she decided that she’d take the role and make it her own. Instead of the cheerleader type rich girl we expect someone like Dalia to be, Chakin decided to instead make her a deadpan leader without a clue or a bit of self awareness.
On working with Cheryl Hines, “Awful”. “Kidding”. She signed on after Chaikin so needless to say Carly says she was elated because she was a big fan. She said Hines exceeds in all areas, works so hard and never complains and if she is having a bad day or is not in a good mood the extent will be a little sigh. She is just that wonderful.
Recently Carly wrote, produced and starred in a short film called Nowhere To Go which is her biggest baby passion product. She recently visited the Beloit, Wisconsin for Best Short out of 50 films, for which she is so excited. She’s also turning it into a feature and working on the script as we speak. But no worries, she loves writing but acting is her passion, it’s always #1.
Be sure to tune in to Suburgatory on Wednesday night at the new time, 8:30 PM EST to find out “What’s Going On With Dalia Royce?”
