The plight of the people of South Africa is a pretty well told story here in America. Be it Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt or George Cloney; we’ve all seen the awareness campaigns asking for donations to help feed the starving people in Africa. We all do what we can, but in this economy it’s hard to make a monetary contribution to all the different charities who are desperately trying to help people. Mr. & Mrs. Leakey and the Massai Tribe of Kenya have a unique and different story to tell.
In 2001 when there was a devastating drought in Rift Valley in Kenya, the Massai men were forced to leave their village and take the cattle to grazing land up north. This is where they met the Leakey’s, who helped them with money for as long as possible. Then it occurred to them that if they made special hand crafted jewelry called Zulugrass, they could sell it around the world and support their own people.
The Zulugrass is strung on elastic so it is very versatile. Zulugrass can be worn in sets or individually. You can layer them in multiple strands to add a splash of colors to any outfit. You can dress them up or down. I chose the turquoise, light green and yellow strands for a fun and vivid summer look. I wore them as a necklace one day, then with a different outfit as bracelets the next. I even tied my hair up for the gym in them. The Zulugrass always went back to its original shape and never got tangled. I love how vivid the colors are and got many compliments on them.
The added bonus is that for every Zulugrass purchase you make, you are helping the people of Kenya help themselves. By hand crafting the jewelry the Massai women are paid for their work plus 5% of profits go back to supporting infrastructure in the Rift Valley of Kenya. You are contributing to a society that desperately needs the help, and looking great at the same time. Zulugrass and other Leakey Collection Jewelry can be purchased at www.leakeycollection.com. Zulugrass retails for $21.95 for two strands. Consider this for your Christmas list this year.
