MilkMakers Lactation Cookies Review!

milkmakers MilkMakers Lactation Cookies Review!A few months ago I was watching one of my favorite shows, The Doctors, and saw a segment on milkmakers cookies.   Milkmakers cookies were born from the desires of a mom looking to keep up her milk supply when she returned to work by utilizing homemade lactation cookies she read so much about.   Emily, the founder of milkmakers, experimented with many recipes before creating her own delicious and nutritious recipe utilizing key ingredients such as brewer’s yeast and ground flax.  Brewer’s yeast has been shown to increase and stimulate the production and flow of breast milk and is a rich source of minerals and B-complex vitamins, while flax seed provides Omega-3′s which has been linked to brain development.  Milkmakers recommends 1-2 of these 230 calorie cookies per day to reap the benefits.

I had been struggling with being too busy to make a healthy snack.  I often found myself noshing on junk just to appease my non-stop hunger.   When I saw this segment I knew I had to try them.  I contacted milkmakers through their website www.milkmakers.com and they very gladly sent me some to try.  I received a box a few days later containing 2 bags of milkmakers cookies.  I first noticed the very minimalist packaging which I love.  The use of brown paper and the orange logo is a winner in my book.  I tend to be a product design critic.  Companies can sell a product on packaging alone, and when you are a mom operation, presentation is everything to get your business of the ground.

Milkmakers cookies are packed 10 to a bag to keep up optimal freshness.  I ate one immediately and placed the two bags in the freezer.

I have a very discerning pallet.  I only used prepackaged ingredients sparingly and never buy prepackaged cookies.  I was a little nervous that they would taste “out of the package”.  I was wrong.  They were so delicious that I actually called my husband and told him how good they were. They ranked along the line with some of the best oatmeal chocolate chip cookies I have tried. I quickly became a cookie coveter.  My kids and my husband really liked them too so I did have to share a few, but only a few.

Milkmakers recommends taking a cookie out of the freezer and setting it on the counter to thaw.  Yeah, I was not having that.  I popped that sucker in the microwave for 30 seconds and ate myself a nice hot cookie with a glass of milk.  I was a little skeptical about freezer freshness but the last cookie was just as good as the first.

So do they work, is probably the big question.  I did not have diminished milk supply when I started, but about a week after using the cookies I actually started overproducing.   I even went to a lactation consultant because of it.  I backed off the cookies for a few days and drank sage tea which did calm it down.  Was there a link, I don’t know, I am not a scientist, but I never had that issue with my first 2 children.  So with my experience I would say yes, they did.  I can also say with 100% accuracy that if I did notice my milk supply going down that I would immediately go to www.milkmakers.com and buy myself more of these delicious cookies along with making an appointment to see my lactation consultant.  I would also recommend the same.

I have a major sweet tooth so I am tempted to buy more because they are so good, but at 230 calories a pop, I need to hold off.  I never lose weight breastfeeding, on the contrary I hold onto all of it until my kids self wean.  But that is a story for another time.

Wow what a great idea for a product! I know you can get your own recipe to for oatmeal lactation cookies, but to have it already made and ready to go. That is awesome! Because if you are already working away from the home who has time to bake more cookies.

If I wasn’t a SAHM I would totally buy these! Great that there are more products coming out for breast-feeders!
