This weekend Tim and I got away to the Wyndham Royal Vista in Pompano Beach Florida without our children. I know some of you are wondering how we pulled this off? I also know some of you are wondering this on two levels.
1. How did you get someone to watch your kids for numerous days and nights so you could go on a vacation?
2. How did you leave your children overnight, didn’t you miss them terribly?
The answers to your questions are wonderful Grandma’s and heck no we didn’t miss them, we have Skype!
Skype gives us the ability to video conference with the boys when we’re away. Tim’s mom wasn’t quite sure how to hook Skype up so a few years ago we walked her through it and now she can talk to her Grandchildren in Ohio as well as help us out when we travel.
The one issue we didn’t quite foresee happening was that the kids really don’t have a lot of interest meeting up with us for a video chat when they are staying with Granny. She keeps them so busy with swimming, arts and crafts and music that they find slowing down to get on the web camera with Mommy and Daddy boring. This weekend each night was a bit of a struggle to try and get them to slow down and chat at all. They just wanted to show us toys and run around and be crazy. But that’s okay, kids will be kids and at least we got to take part in what they were doing.
Technology is a really nifty piece of work. While we sit in one part of the State I can chat via computer and video chat with my kids. We can see each other. We could do this anywhere in the world. And this is just the tip of the iceberg, there is so much more already being utilized. You can learn about it at http://www.skype.com.
