Last Thursday I had my tubes tied. Yes you heard me right, I made the decision I was finished having children. Although I am sound in my decision, it had a lot to do with the ability to take some class C+ medications for some other conditions I deal with. After the surgery I’ve been left pretty sore and there is a few days recovery time where all you want to do is lie on the couch and watch television or nap. I’ve taken to watching Netflix, because entertainment has always been my biggest comfort. Torchwood and Top of the Lake are the two shows on Netflix I’ve lost myself in the past few days. You might enjoy them too, give them a chance.
Torchwood– I truly believe that Dr. Who is a joke created to punk everyone who watches it and those who say they like it are in on the joke. I’ve tried watching and think it’s awful and low budget. However the spin off known as Torchwood starring John Barrowman is one of the best television shows I have ever seen in my entire life. It’s about a (mostly) top secret crime fighting team that fight aliens that find their way into our world. It’s way better then I have made it sound and not at all low budget. The best part is that it is built on relationships and it is character driven. You become invested in these characters and really care what happens to them in each episode and because of the type of show (think Charmed, X-files, CSI) each episode one of them is in peril. Check it out!
Top of the Lake– When 12 year old Tui tries to kill herself in a freezing lake so begins the path of a lost little girl with a secret growing inside. This involves the police and an investigation headed up by Robin played by Elisabeth Moss (West Wing, Mad Men). Soon after her failed suicide attempt Tui comes up missing and when her bully father gets involved with the investigation the townspeople seem tight lipped. Will Robin find the most help from the women’s commune led by GJ played by Holly Hunter, the last people to see Tui? Or is she completely on her own in searching for this young girl before time runs out? And will Robin’s own familiar demons take her down too dark a path to solve this mystery? Taking place in the beautiful setting of New Zealand this is a modern day Whodunit.
These shows kept me pretty busy during the evenings. Then in the morning my kids woke me up to funny face pancakes. I left Tim the picture from the blog Always Order Dessert and he used our own recipe for pancakes which includes cinnamon and vanilla in Krusteaz. A little bit of store and a little bit of scratch is how we roll in the Allport household. Tim says the kids had fun playing in the kitchen, I wish I could have taken part. To make all you need to do is use either cream cheese (my favorite) or whip cream to make a face then use some berries for eyes, grapes for a nose or even a tongue. Just get creative and make it colorful. There is no wrong way to make a silly face pancake!
