One of the things I love most in my world right now is my sweet, adorable 2 year old nephew. Call me crazy, but I seriously believe those terrible two tantrums melt away when he comes to visit Aunt Aimee’s house. I find myself trying to make sure I have the right toys for his interest at the moment (because we all know how quickly that changes!), his favorite foods and things that will make him feel comfy, cozy and secure when he’s away from Mommy & Daddy. That’s why I jumped on the chance to try out the Pajanimals large plush and Snuggle Up Story Mat. I have to admit though, I was mostly won over when I found out this new character line was created by Jim Henson.
Just looking at the brightly colored box, his eyes went huge and “Wooooow!” instantly came out of his mouth. This, of course, gets my adrenaline pumping and assures me that, yes, I AM the favorite Aunt! When I pulled out the mat, he immediately knew what to do with it. I suppose this is what nap time at daycare prepares you for. We laid it out on the floor and started checking out the coolest part of it, which is the fabric “pages” that make up the pillow part and act like book pages with different, fun pictures of the Pajanimals characters as you flip through. He also loved the plush toy, which was the purple cow officially named Cowbella. This name was hard for him to get down, so we settled for Moo-Shoo for now.
My favorite feature of the mat is that the top blanket piece is connected on one side only and is quite a bit larger than the bottom part you lay on, which creates lots of wiggle room. Connar figured out really fast this was a great place to be silly and play peek-a-boo and hide underneath the top cover. The plush cow was also cozy enough to be a 3rd addition to his usual bedtime stuffed animal pair – a monkey and a lion. Crazy combination, but it sure worked for him!
So after playing and taking super cute pictures, it was really time to snuggle down and get ready for bed. He was very happy to stay on the mat beside my bed and insisted on sleeping there the whole night. The only thing is we did have to add another pillow for him to use. The fabric book pages as a pillow is fun and entertaining, but definitely could use more stuffing! To help Connar, Cowbella (Moo-Shoo) and I get snuggled down and ready for dreams, we had to finish off the night with a few old episodes of The Muppets – just what Jim Henson ordered!
I would recommend this to any mom, grandma or aunt who has a child in the 2-4 year old range. I was very pleased to see the next morning during clean up, that the pillow/book section had a velcro flap to hold the pages together. Also, after rolling (or folding) up the mat, there is another flap to keep it all together and makes it super easy to put away without taking up hardly any room. What’s better is it will be ready to bring back out in a snap whenever I get another chance for an awesome sleepover!
