Recently I’ve heard a lot of chatter about cow’s milk. As a kid I drank a lot of milk, but as an adult I have tapered off because I don’t really want to add the extra calories and fat to my daily diet. Jake consumes about a gallon of milk a week, but he’s young and doesn’t have to worry so much about his calories, yet. About the most important reason for drinking milk in my opinion is the Calcium and Vitamin D, which milk is full of. So I went searching for the answer on how to get the much needed nutrients that milk provides, but without the added calories and fat and I found Silk All Natural Soy Milk.
Silk has a complete line of soy based milk products that you can use to substitute cow’s milk. I’ve seen the advertisements for the Silk
vs. Milk challenge in my grocery store, but never gave it a try until Silk asked me to. Now keep in mind that I’m not typically one to jump on the “organic” band wagon and being an old school mom I have a tendency to lean toward the common old fashioned ways of thinking when it comes to health. So for me to take the plunge into a soy bean based milk product was no small feat. Not to mention I come from the sticks of the Midwest. I can’t throw a rock in my town without hitting either a dairy farmer or someone who has a dairy farmer in the family. This challenge would not find harder competition than I.
I began by reading up on what exactly Silk is and why it’s better than cow’s milk. I admit, they had me on this. I learned that Silk is Cholesterol Free, has 50% more calcium and 80% less saturated fat than typical dairy milk. I also learned that Silk requires 14,000 gallons less water to produce than milk and per half gallon generates 65% fewer greenhouse gasses. This makes Silk “Green” and that is something I stand behind 100%. Then there was the issue of the added hormones that you consume when drinking cow’s milk. Now my family has not had any issues with this, but I know of others that have and I know it’s a major concern of parents with young children today.
The real test is in the taste. It can be the healthiest thing on earth, but if it tastes bad, it’s a no go in my household. So I purchased a half gallon of the Pure Almond Chocolate Silk for Jake and a half gallon of the Pure Almond Coconut Silk for me. Jake (the pickiest person on earth) preferred the Silk to his regular chocolate milk. He loved how thick and chocolaty Silk was. Honestly, it was like pouring him a healthy chocolate milk shake. He replaced his usual ice cream dessert with Silk Pure Almond Dark Chocolate Soy Milk and he’s already noticed a difference in his weight. On the more healthy side of the Silk Spectrum, I tried the coconut. Admittedly, I had a hard time at first getting used to the heavier texture that Silk has in comparison to regular cow’s milk, but I used it to make a smoothie and was very impressed! The Silk really gave the smoothie a rich deep flavor that I hadn’t gotten with regular milk in the past.
So the bottom line of my Silk vs. Milk challenge is that given the facts and knowing how much better the Silk products are for you, I have changed over to Silk for many of my milk needs, especially cooking. Jake drinks nothing but Silk now and loves it. I think it is definitely the wave of the future. Take the Silk vs. Milk Challenge in your home today and feel the benefits of the Silk healthier alternative to cow’s milk.

I use Silk original light every day. I do wish they made the same one without added sugars, though! (A different brand has that, but none of my stores carry it.)
