Did you have a favorite teacher in school? I’ve had so many it is hard to remember all of them. A really great teacher challenges you to be the best you can be. He or She won’t settle for anything less than the your greatest effort. They make teaching fun and not routine.

I remember my 1st grade teacher, Ms. Meyers, Suzanne Meyers from Indian Trail Elementary school. I don’t exactly remember what it was I loved about her, but I remember that when I moved away to Orlando, she wrote me a letter. That was really special and I still have it. She was young and pretty, in that way a 1st grader thinks is magical. She was sweet and always wore a smile and was able to make you feel warm and comfortable at all times. I wanted to be just like her when I grew up.

In junior high school there was Ms. Thompson. She had cancer, I remember this well. She was my 7th grade English teacher at Teague Middle School. She wasn’t popular, the kids were mean to her and I’d like to think I was not this way. Maybe I was though, I can’t remember. Either way as an adult I can realize just how much she cared for each and every child in her classroom. She tried so hard to get through to everyone, me especially. She sat me down one day and told me that I reminded her of a bird who flew too steeply and only pulled up right before they hit a tree. She wanted me to be a bird that flied gracefully through the sky. This translated into “You don’t try hard enough and only do what you must to get by, but you have the potential to do so much more”. At the time I found her annoying, but of course now I realize how concerned she really was. Now I can appreciate that.

These are two teachers that made an impact on me. I have many many more. Now in just 2 weeks Jason will be starting Kindergarten. I have so many emotions around this situation. I’m nervous for him because he won’t know anyone at his new school. I’m excited for him because he is social and I know he will have a good time. I also have this anticipatory feeling, wondering what teachers in his life will make an impact like my Ms. Meyers and Ms. Thompson.

I wish I could go back in time and give them a Simmons Beautyrest Mattress so they could receive better sleep for back to school, but that is not possible. So please tell me if there is a teacher who has impacted you or your child. It doesn’t have to be a teacher you are learning from right now, as long as they are a teacher in Florida the contest is fair game. Leave a comment and tell me why this teacher is so special. Winner will be pulled via Random.org but I’d love a good story to go along with my winner.

Also please keep an eye out because Mattress Giant will be tweeting about this Better Sleep For Back To School @mattress_giant and also have a Facebook page where you can add your favorite teacher stories http://www.facebook.com/MattressGiant

Rules and Regulations: Anyone ages 18+ is welcome to nominate their favorite Florida based teacher. Each individual can only nominate one teacher, but that teacher can receive more than one nomination from other persons. Winner will be chosen via Random.org on August 22nd at Midnight EST. You must leave teachers full name and school at which they teach and a reason why they deserve to win. Teacher will win a Queen Size Simmons Beauty Rest Ridgewood Plush Mattress and Box Spring set.

Also find some coupons from Mattress Giant so that you can provide yourself or your school age child with the gift of better sleep. MG Back-to-school Coupons

I would love to nominate my husband, Nathan Hay from Maxey and now Spring Lake Elementary. This is his 7th year of teaching. In 2008 he received his Master’s degree in Teacher Admin and earned the prestigious National Board of Certification. He is an excellent teacher, always striving to better his class each and every year. The proof is in the paperwork; he has had the highest FCAT scores in his entire school for the past 4 consecutive years! He is very dedicated to his students, going out of his way to brighten their day or reward them for a job well done. He has also encouraged his classes to read over 3,000 AR books and go National on the Accelerated Reading program. He would be a wonderful candidate for this giveaway and honored to win a very comfortable mattress.

I would like to nominate my teaching partner, Katie King of Rock Springs Academy in Apopka. She is a very young mom and an amazing teacher to our pre-kindergarten students. She is patient, kind and very good at explaining things at their level. She is much younger than me, but I have learned so much from her and have become a better teacher because of her. I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to work alongside such a wonderful teacher!

I nominate my sister, Kathleen Dial, who teaches second grade at Imagine South Lake Elementary School in Clermont. Our mother was a wonderful teacher who was always a favorite of the students in our hometown. Unfortunately, we and her future students lost her to cancer way too young. I am so proud of my sister for carrying on my mother’s teaching legacy!

I’d like to nominate Lori Delvento who was a kindergarten teacher last year at Trinity Christian School is Apopka. Mrs Delvento was such a wonderful teacher. She was loving to the kids and truly cared about them. She was always willing to talk to parents when they needed assistance. Karolyn loved her and so did I. Unforunatly due to low enrollment for kindergarten she did not have her contract renewed last year. We were very upset because we know that she is a wonderful teacher. We were hoping she’d come teach at the school we are attending this year because we changed schools but that did not work out. I would have loved another year with her. Karolyn even told me that she wished she could have Mrs Delvento as a teacher again. Where ever she is teaching now those children will be so blessed to have such a wonderful teacher.

For these reasons I nominate Kim Harris.

I approve of and highly respect her patient and creative teaching style. My daughter is returning to her class as a first-grader and is extremely excited about seeing and learning even more from Mrs. O’Leary.

I nominate Cindy Skeen who is an excellent first grade teacher at Trinity Christian School. She has such patience and love for the little ones. Her joy in teaching is reflected in her student’s love of learning. They make Science visors which they wear during experiments. I walked in one day during Science and just loved their enthusiasm. You would have thought that Mrs. Skeen was the one who invented each one of the experiments! She respects each individual and you can tell they respect and love her. She corrects them with love and not humiliation. She shows them how important they are to her on a daily basis. If I had a little one, I would be blessed if they could be in her class. She deserves Calgon “take me away” and a restful sleep :)

I’d like to nominate Kristin Butrico of Heritage Middle School in Deltona, Fl. She is the band director and they have NO budget. That’s right.. none. All paper, supplies, fixing the instruments, etc, falls on her asking students to chip in or out of her pocket. :(
I’m sure she doesn’t sleep well because of that.
Two of my three kids are in band and they adore her! Heritage is a great band because of a great person!! <3

I would like to nominate Esther Breem, a home-schooling mom of 4. She went to school for teaching, and after having her children, felt led to home school. She gives above and beyond for her entire family. She has been an excellent resource in helping me reach new levels with “after” teaching my gifted son, and is in dire need of a new bed, and winning this would be such a reward to all of her dedication and hard work.

I want to nominate my husband, David Alan Perry. He is beginning his 2nd year at Gainesville High School and is going to teach freshman for the first time! His experience has been with seniros, so this year is going to be interesting for him! He may need that super-comfy mattress for a good night’s sleep to tackle this new challenge! He is so great with kids, especially high school age. He has an amazing ability to relate to his students, giving them inspiration and encouragement to be responsible and give 100% towards all they strive to achieve. I know he is cherished by his students by all the letters and messages he receives from them daily during the school year. If anyone deserves this, David Perry certainly does!

I feel that she could go work someplace else and make more money, but she is committed to Christian education.

I nominate Richard “Todd” Sickles, who works at Vista Lakes elementary school in Orlando, FL, with autistic children. The care and love that he gives to these children is incredible! When others notice the behavioral differences that accompany children on the autistic spectrum, he looks deeper to see what they are trying to communicate through that behavior. As a male in a very female dominated industry, he is very much respected by both teachers and students alike and has been able to make connections with autistic children (many of whom are male) that others have been less successful in. His passion for such a well deserving population of students is unmatched, and with the physical requirements of his job, he can certainly use a good night’s sleep to help him connect even better with his students!

I nominate Todd Sickles. He shows a great amount of caring and patience while teaching and working with special needs children in Orlando. The mental and physical effort required to work with the children in his classroom is unbelievable. Many of his students often need to be physically restrained or have other very specific and challenging physical needs that Todd doesn’t just “deal with.” Instead, he loves and craves it!

I would like to nominate Angela Veltman from Rock Springs Elementary. She was my 1st impression of the school being my sons K teacher and take it from someone who was about to homeschool her child she is amazing! She is patient and kind and never seemed to let the crazy ones in her class get the best of her! She has two kids of her own to worry about but never seemed overwheled with the pressures of the day. Besides being a great teacher, what mom couldnt use a new bed?!!
