The Green Police. Friend Or Foe?

by Lee on February 8, 2010

Green Police 300x170 The Green Police. Friend Or Foe?Last night during the Superbowl we were bombarded with a ton of new commercials. Many of them suffered from ineffective marketing tactics. But one stood out to many viewers and I’m not talking about the Tebow ad. The Green Police ad by Audi had people on Twitter riled up over…what exactly?

In the commercial a fake team of “Environmental Police” go around town reprimanding citizens for their crimes against our planet. Things like using incandescent lightbulbs, drinking out of styrofoam cups and choosing plastic bags in a grocery store. There was even an appearance by a pollutant sniffing anteater, though I’m still not sure what that was about.

The premise behind the commercial was to educate people on the damage we are doing to our planet. It was a satire and in no way meant to be taken seriously. You are not going to get arrested for throwing away your orange rind, at least not today.

However if in the future we do create some form of authority to reprimand crimes against our ecosystem would that be so bad? Are we thinking about tomorrow today? As the mother of 2 small children I can’t help but think about the world my great grandchildren will be forced to contend with if more people don’t start taking action.

I’d like you to watch the commercials for yourself and decide if it took part in some great offense. I always invite every one’s opinion on my blog and today is no different.

Until man duplicates a blade of grass, nature can laugh at his so called scientific knowledge. – Thomas Edison

I think people work themselves up over nothing. You realize that there are people who don’t believe in global warming right? What crazy is that? It’s hot here during the winter in Florida, ice caps are melting all over the world, our ozone is all but gone. Yet some people don’t think there is such a thing?

I don’t believe in Global warming – if there is such a thing then it should be turned back on now by Al Gore.. we are all freezing!! I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that it was all a big hoax or something.. I read this blog once.. if I can remember who’s blog it was.. I’ll tell them to pop over here and have a snifter at this.. heheh.

LOVE IT!
It could be because it gives me the ability to feel smug…
I take the bus or walk…
I don’t use any bags plastic or paper (there is a law about it here in Toronto if you use plastic bags you get charged $.05 each)
I have the new light bulbs (they were handing them out for free at Home Depot here, and my niece was selling them as fundraising for her school)
No foam cups..
I recycle and compost (also a city of Toronto By-law, you can recycle and compost as much as you want for free, but if you use more than 1 1/2 bags of garbage every other week it will cost you extra)
Global warming or not all these these things are things I do to save money, doing some eco-good is just a by-product.
Its really not that difficult to do once you get used to it, there really isn’t any excuse.

I think it’s a cute commercial, but I’m an earth-friendly mom. It’s not just about the ozone, it’s about the environment as a whole! I recently found out that my kids’ schools have been using Styrofoam products for the last several years instead of the washable trays they used to and I’m NOT happy about it. Not only is it a huge negative for mother earth, but it’s probably costing the schools at least $100 a day to use the crap. UGH!!!

I thought it was a cute commercial too. I liked the point they were trying to make. I can’t believe there was an uproar on Twitter about it – what was so offensive about it?

I thought it was rather funny and took it for what it was. A satire. I don’t get what people are mad about?

I thought it was funny. And, I believe in global warming and protecting our environment. Maybe you have to question those things to find offense in the commercial?

The only thing that pissed me off was yet another ad company raping songs from my teen years. And the whole Stepford Community thing. :P

If I am not mistaken, the town of Stepford from the movie was based on Bridgeford, Connecticut and that was the town name on the side of the police car in the commercial.

I do believe in being eco-friendly, but they also need to make the “green” stuff affordable for everyone. If it wasn’t so expensive, more people would be doing it.

I thought the ad was brilliant. It was able to….apeal, for lack of a better word, to two completely different camps. It is not too often something can stir the fringes on both sides.

I thought the ad made the Green Police look over reaching and sinisterly comical(not comical like ha ha, but maniacal like brwahahahah). Somewhat like Mall Cop on steroids, which isn’t a good thing. Do I think we need to take care of our planet? Of Course! We all have to live on this rock, so it is in our best interest to take care of it. Do I think we need yet ANOTHER ill prepared, burracratic nightmere of a government agency to do what common sense should tell you to do. I don’t think so.

I loved it. But I’m pretty green, too. I do as much as I can to minimize my impact on the Earth. Of course the commercial was a joke, but hey, if it happens to help open some eyes to what we’re doing to the planet, more power to it.

The side of the police car said Bridgeport and believe me, Bridgeport, CT is NOT a stepford community. ;)

It is a car commercial, why all the hoopla? Can’t people just take what is on TV for what it is? Entertainment.

I definitely think it’s important to be conscious of how our actions impact the environment and I applaud those who live green. I’m not there yet though and don’t think I ever will get to that point, but picking up litter isn’t going to kill me and it’s a good example for the kids.

I do think that is a rather silly way to promote going green. I am all for a healthy environment but those advertisers really didn’t look into what the major concerns about becoming carbon zero are with the sceptics. Here in England most sceptics go on about it all being about tax and then here you have people being controlled by law to go green, not the friendliest of messages to promote the cause. That car isn’t even carbon zero, it’s a hybrid so still emits CO2.

Its a fantastic advert if you are green or are on your way/thinking about it, but if you are sceptical about climate change, worried about green-taxes etc… I think this advert would be more of a deterrent than a help.

No need to go super crazy over a funny advert though, wish English ads were that entertaining.
