If you’ve read my reviews in the past, you know that I am a huge fan of entertaining, especially in the summer months out on my deck. I love sharing the experience of hanging out on a warm summer night having cocktails with friends. Only one big downfall, mosquitoes! The bugs will drive you crazy and with as much rain as we’ve seen in the past couple years here in the Midwest, it’s a losing battle. All the store bought chemical sprays make you smell terrible and they don’t work as well as they say they do, plus who really likes putting that on their skin, or worse, their child’s skin?
I’ve tried everything from Tiki Torches with repellent, Yard Guard, Citronella Candles and even the special plants that claim to ward off mosquitoes. My father purchased an expensive fogger, which is great if you are okay with your friends and family being fumigated and breathing in all those chemicals. It gets to a point you pack up and go inside because you can’t win. Well, those days are over, I just got my hands on the best outdoor product since the pool float. ThermaCell Mosquito Repellent Patio Lantern has made my outdoor parties a hit again.
When I received my ThermaCell Patio Lantern I was thrilled to see that it could be used as a mosquito repellent as well as a light. I typically put out many citronella candles which illuminated my deck nicely, but never really worked to get rid of the blood suckers. Now with my new ThermaCell Mosquito Repellent Patio Lantern I have a beautiful ornament for the top of my bar that also lights up the entire area, as well as a mosquito repellent that works.
The day my ThermaCell lantern arrived it just so happened that I was having a small party so I was really excited about trying it out. The lantern itself is really easy to use. It came with a butane cartridge and a packet of repellent mats that have allethrin, which is a synthetic copy of a natural repellent found in chrysanthemum flowers. The lantern takes 4 AA batteries I got it all set up in about 5 minutes. As my guests arrived I told them all that they should tell me if they were being bothered by mosquitoes and I pointed out the lantern.
As the night progressed we were all impressed by how well the ThermaCell Lantern was working. For the first 3 hours of the party, no one sitting on the deck had any issues with mosquitoes. When the repellent mat started to turn white the Lantern did not work as well, that is when it’s time to change to a new mat. Between 5:00 PM and 10:00 PM we changed the mat one time and the second mat should still have a couple hours left in it.
The ThermaCell Patio Lantern protects a 15’x15’ square foot area and is proven to be 98% effective, according to tests conducted by the U.S. Department of Defense, in repelling not only mosquitoes, but black flies and no-see-ums as well. It’s completely silent and extremely light weight.
On the day we tried it out, we had been pummeled with rain all morning followed by sun shine and rising humidity. I had prepared my homemade mango rum runners that are loaded with sugar and lots of snacks to be put out on the bar, the perfect playground for mosquitoes and flies. In the 5 hours spent outside in those conditions, I was not bit one time. My dog did not seem to be fighting off flies and the majority of my guests reported no bite’s either. In that time only 3 or 4 bites were counted among 10 people. That is pretty effective if you ask me.
The ThermaCell Mosquito Repellent Patio Lantern is EPA approved, U.S. Military tested and used, safer and cleaner than candles that turns off if tipped over and is an effective alternative to smelly lotions and sprays that you apply to your skin. You can purchase the ThermaCell Mosquito Repellent Patio Lantern and its refills at national retailers such as Home Depot, as well as hardware and other outdoor retailers for a MSRP of $29.99.
