I have a hidden passion for fishing. I love the thought of sitting quietly while the boat rocks back and forth, sun in my face, waiting to see when and if something will take my bait. It is ultimate relaxation for me. I hope to pass this love on to my children as well with the help of the new book World Without Fish by the New York Times bestseller Mark Kurlansky.
Mark Kurlansky, a former commercial fisherman, has written numerous books on the oceans as well as winning many awards such as the James A. Beard Award, Glenfiddich Award for food writing, ALA Notable Book Award, New York Public Library Best Book of the year Award along with many others. He is also a father of 10 year old Talia Kurlansky, his #1 fishing buddy and with whom he utilized to help create this wonderful book for children. In the book he is able to connect the dots between biology, economics, evolution, politics, climate, history, culture, food and nutrition all in a manner that is understandable to children.
World Without Fish covers many topics that both children and parents should know such as:
- why you should eat fish but only good ones that were harvested sustainably
- what sustainable is and where to find it
- impact of oil spills and pollution to ocean life
- history of fishing
- effects of over fishing
I can honestly say that this book is a must have for anyone concerned with saving the world’s oceans and interested in knowing more about the seafood they are eating or catching. There is so much information contained in this book that I never knew and some I actually find disturbing. Find this book at local retailers or online through major book sellers. You can also learn more about Mark at his website www.MarkKurlansky.com.

I am trying to cook from scratch more often and recycle.
Seems interesting. I love fish, so would be in interesting read for me.
Seeing as my husband has become a vegan I have cut back also. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway
I have just begun eating more fish. I used to eat a lot of fish when I was growing up. I think this book would teach me a lot. Looks like a good read.
I buy and eat local most of the time-I eat seasonally as well.
trying my hardest to grow a vegetable garden – local food!
I am learning to make home made hand soaps. helenkeeler@comcast.net
I too have embraced eating local products. Plus, meeting the people who actually grow or make the items is an extra treat!
I have fished since I was a child so this book would be a great win. We grow a vegetable garden every year since 1957 when we married. We can, freeze and eat the veggie’s fresh. It sure save’s on the grocery bill.
I try to buy products with packaging that can be recycled or composted.
I am buying more green products and recycling alot more
We are cutting back on electrical usage and going to alternative sources of energy like solar:)
We compost and recycle everything! We have the tiniest garbage can and very little goes into it. We carpool. We turn off and unplug the appliances when not in use, even the microwave and toaster! We only run the hot water heater when it’s not in use. We plant our own fruits and vegetables… The health of our planet and the creatures on it is very important to me!
Thanks for the contest! tiasweepstakes@gmail.com
