Awards season is one of my favorites season’s of the year, right up against Halloween. Since movies are my favorite past time, choosing a winner is just icing on the cake. All year long I watch and wait, making my own mental list of whose performances were the best, which costume design I couldn’t get enough of (hello Great Gatsby) and which movie I think really deserves the golden statue. This year Fandango has created the Fandango Awards Ballot Challenge where you can place your vote for your favorites this year. There are weekly prizes and a huge grand prize as well.
I can tell you my favorites because they are no secret:
Best Picture: SO, this is my hardest choice, I’m really torn. I haven’t seen Dallas Buyers Club yet and I think that might end up being my favorite. David O. Russel is absolutely my favorite Director but I’m just not sure American Hustle is Oscar worthy material. 12 Years a Slave is outstanding but historically speaking the Academy doesn’t like to give Oscars to movies that show the weaknesses of our own people. For now I say American Hustle. I may change that after I watch Dallas Buyers Club this week.
Best Leading Actress: I am not a huge fan of Meryl Streep (yes I know she is so wonderful blah blah blah) however this one time I think she hit the nail on the head for her character. I choose her hands down.
Best Leading Actor: Another hard question. Chiwetel Ejiofor was moving in his role but Leo DiCaprio really kicked some serious butt in Wolf of Wall Street. Don’t forget I haven’t seen DBC so things might change. But for now I’m check the Leo box. I still think he looks like a little boy playing dress up but by golly, that little boy did a bang up job as the out of control stockbroker.
Best Supporting Actress: Julia Roberts has always been the love of my life. And then Jennifer Lawrence came around and turned into my kinda dirty mistress. Now my heart is constantly torn between them. However this time I think I choose the love of my life. Jennifer definitely deserved her win last year for SLP but this year I just don’t feel it. Roberts however knocked it out of the park as the stressed out daughter of a dying drug addicted dramatic cancer patient hell bent on ruining the lives of everyone around her. Oh and Nyong’O did great too but I’m not feeling it.
Best Supporting Actor: Get outta town with making me choose on this ballot. I call Shenanigans. It’s basically impossible. All these men did an outstanding job. And let us not forget one of them was a cab driver who had never as much as taken an acting class (Abdi). I haven’t seen DBC and everyone says Leto deserves it 100% hands down so I have a feeling my opinion on this will change. As of right now I am voting for Jonah Hill because I thought he was hysterical as the incestuous business partner of Leo’s in WoWS. He was equally out of control but just the fact that he is Jonah Hill made it a bit more slapstick amusing. But no matter who wins this category it’ll be well deserved.
Best Director: David O. Russel. No there is nothing you will ever say that will make me choose otherwise. He directed Silver Linings Playbook which resonated so personally with me that I will vote for him until the day one of us dies.
Best Song: I choose Happy by Pharrel from Despicable Me 2. Honestly, I love the Moon Song which is sung by Scarlett Johansson in the movie Her but that isn’t exactly what is nominated so I don’t choose it now.
Best Costume Design: Did you see me mention Great Gatsby earlier? Honestly, it is just a shame more things from this movie weren’t nominated. It was a classic turned into a many faceted gem.
