Nostalgic, for me, that is the word I would use to describe the musical Jersey Boys The Story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons playing at the Dr. Phillips Center, Orlando. Having come of age in the 60’s this musical took me back to a time when pop music was full of close harmonies, great instrumentation, and moving rhythms and Jersey Boys was spot on. From the opening bar to the final refrain the performers captured the sound and the style of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons using their music to tell their story.
The set was simple and effective allowing the characters to give us a glimpse into their lives and to take the audience into their world. The audience became an integral part of the performance and the story. I especially loved the use of the projection of the clips of The Ed Sullivan Show and The American Band Stand.
This musical gives an honest look into the difficulties of breaking into the music business, life on the road doing two-bit gigs, and finally making it into the “big time” while trying to stay true to yourself and the people who matter. We, as the general public, only see the glitz and the glamor, but the artists who entertain us give up a lot personally to be in the spotlight.
This musical captures it all. It has love, success, failure, and honor. I loved it and would highly recommend it to all.
