First things first, what is Paramount Network, you know you’re wondering so let’s just get it out of the way. Paramount Network was Spike TV but I guess they decided to do away with that and rebrand. Apparently, this actually happened 6 months ago but could have fooled me, I didn’t know anything about it. I swear I have not scrolled through my channels and found Paramount Network on my screen. This probably says more about the fact we as a society don’t channel surf anymore rather than anything about the network itself. No matter because now Paramount Network introduces Yellowstone, a new show which I’m quite excited about. It’s going to star Kevin Costner and one of my favorite actors Wes Bentley. We rarely see enough of Wes Bentley so any chance to relish in his work sounds great to me. He’s come a long way from watching that plastic bag float around.
Yellowstone – So What’s It About?
Here’s a synopsis offered up by the network: In “Yellowstone,” Costner stars as John Dutton, who controls the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, under constant attack by those it borders — land developers, an Indian reservation, and America’s first National Park. It is an intense study of a violent world far from media scrutiny — where land grabs make developers billions, and politicians are bought and sold by the world’s largest oil and lumber corporations. Where drinking water poisoned by fracking wells and unsolved murders are not news: they are a consequence of living in the new frontier. It is the best and worst of America seen through the eyes of a family that represents both.
But Why Is Lee Watching? Is It Because Of A Guy?
Don’t judge me. I’ll have you know I’ve found some of the greatest shows on TV because of a good looking guy. And I’ve hooked you on them as well! So yes, maybe this is one reason I’m watching but don’t knock it. Paramount Network’s Yellowstone mainly appeals to me because of the cast. I mentioned Wes Bentley above but it will also include another favorite of mine Ian Bohen from Teen Wolf. I would, have and DO sacrifice an hour each night for Ian while I re-watch Teen Wolf repeatedly so I can certainly offer up an hour a week for new work. He’s a strong actor, expressive/reactive and did I mention he’s pretty? He knows he’s pretty too, kinda has this RDJ thing going on without quite as much ‘tude. I currently have zero idea how big his role will be but I’ll watch no matter what.
The subject matter also appeals to me. I mean hello, who hates fracking? Ed Begley Jr., Raphael Sbarge and Lee Allport do! We even created a PSA about it! Get that cancer-causing bull out of my water. There also seemed to be a lot of violence going on. What could possibly be causing so much upset if that land is yours? I’m certainly looking forward to finding out! Even more entertaining will be Kelly Reilly, who is always fun, fighting with her brother, she actually takes a swing at him in the trailer and chases a wild animal off the ranch. I choose to believe this is her in real life though I’m probably wrong and she’s just a truly talented actress.
Taylor Sheridan is the show creator here and will also direct. He’s behind Wind River which I loved with the passion of 1,000 fiery suns but also behind Hell or High Water which actually pained me to watch. I’m not always a fan of “man movies” which I count as movies that are mostly violence. I need some kind of emotional relationship to get attached to but I’m sure Yellowstone will have this, you can tell by the trailer. Or it needs to star Jeremy Renner which this does not. The good news is my husband loves this type of entertainment and so he’ll be thrilled to watch along with me. Basically, I said “Kevin Costner has a new show…” and he had already set a reminder on his phone.
So tell me, will you check out Paramount Network to see what Yellowstone has to offer? It airs on June 20th, sync up your phone with Tim’s y’all!
*Update: I received 3 episodes and will watch right away. Will get back to you on what I think.
