About a month ago Tim and I stopped into Tampa’s Ulele, Native Inspired Food & Spirits. Break the chain and dine out at a one of a kind restaurant located on the Tampa Riverwalk. While you wait for a table you can enjoy the artwork created by artists such as Dominique Martinez. Here you’ll see a metal bull sculpture done by him and also a sculpture of Ulele done by another talented artist. Once you sit down be sure an order a beer off the Ulele Spring Brewery. Keep reading to find out what we enjoyed and what I recommend you pass on when you visit.
Crab Mac & Cheese
Well, Tim is boring and refuses to try crab so this was just Mac & Cheese. However it tasted like creamy, cheesey pasta pieces from heaven. I couldn’t stop eating this dish and wouldn’t let them remove it from the table. I can only imagine how much the crab would have added to the flavor. This is a must try.
Roasted Beets & Poached Pear
I mainly included this because it adds so much color to my review. But Tim did enjoy it very much and I tasted a poached pear. Beets are a huge favorite for Tim so he ate this salad up quickly. It also had delicious whipped goat cheese which made my day. Because cheese is always my favorite.
10oz Filet Mignon
Tim actually ordered it his and allowed me to try it. I use the word allow very strongly because this was the softest most buttery filet I’ve had in all my years reviewing food. We asked for the filet medium rare and it was perfect. Just underdone but not in a bad way. I wanted more and he wasn’t will to give it up and for this we are still in a tiff.
I would stay away from this dish. Actually, if you know you like Panko-crusted chicken you might like this. I found it to be a bit tough and hard to chew. I couldn’t even give the muenster cheese or wild river rice the attention it deserved while concentrating on getting through the breast. Not my favorite. Tim agreed.
White Cheddar Popcorn Mashed Potatoes
This entire side confused me. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t stale popcorn atop mashed potatoes. The thing is I can honestly tell you I think most people like this savory dish. I was unimpressed and would never order it again. Take the 2 day old movie popcorn out of my perfectly tasty mashed potatoes please.
Toasted Coconut Ice Cream
It’s such a treat to coconut ice cream out of a coconut shell. It was a bit wobbly though and it kept me from finishing it. Probably all for the better though as I ate so much other food I could barely breathe. I’d recommend this as dessert but I bet the others are great as well.
When you’re in the mood for a unique restaurant with a great history Ulele is the place to go. There are a lot of other choices on the Ulele menu like lobster, meatloaf and a list of salads. You could enjoy this Tampa restaurant a few times and continue trying a completely new meal each time. Enjoy.
